Cow dung cakes — known across India as uple, kande, goha or chhaana — are one of the oldest ritual and household materials in the country. They are still central to havan, yagna and pooja, and they remain a clean-burning natural fuel. This is a short guide to what they are, why they hold such significance, and how to tell a good dung cake from a poor one.
What are cow dung cakes
A cow dung cake is exactly what it sounds like: cow dung shaped by hand into a flat round or patty and dried in the sun until it is hard and light. Traditionally they are made from the dung of indigenous cows, with nothing added. Well-made cakes are dry all the way through, hold together without crumbling, and light easily.
Why cow dung cakes are used in havan and pooja
In the Vedic tradition, the cow is sacred, and its dung is considered pure — one of the five products of panchagavya. For havan and yagna, cow dung cakes are used to build the sacred fire because they light cleanly, burn steadily, and are believed to purify the surrounding air. Many families consider a fire built on genuine desi cow dung cakes essential to the ritual being done properly.
Common uses of cow dung cakes
- Havan and yagna: as the base fuel for the sacred fire in religious ceremonies.
- Dhoop and daily pooja: burned to release a natural, cleansing smoke.
- Traditional rites: used in various last-rite and festival rituals across India.
- Natural mosquito and insect repellent: the smoke has long been used to keep insects away in villages.
- Clean-burning fuel: still used for cooking fires and warmth in many parts of the country.
What makes a good cow dung cake
- Made from indigenous cow dung — ideally a grass-fed desi breed like the Gir.
- Fully sun-dried — no damp centre, so it lights fast and burns without heavy smoke.
- Clean and additive-free — no chemicals, binders or filler.
- Firm and intact — holds its shape and does not crumble into dust in the pack.
